(PODCAST INTERVIEW TIPS PT. 4)

Psst! Scroll to the bottom to download the free infographic for this post.

Have you ever been interviewed on a podcast, celebrated as the episode went live, and then found yourself wondering “now what”? Do you put your phone on the table, stare at it intensely, and wait anxiously for new customers to start calling frantically? Will they even remember where to find your business or how they can get in touch with you after listening to the whole episode?

You’ve probably already heard about the tremendous benefits of being a guest on a podcast show and the massive growth potential for your brand. But much like a radio ad, you’re not going to get any more emails, web traffic, callers, Facebook likes etc. if the memorability factor of that information isn’t dynamite!

Unlike blogs, social media posts or Google ads, there’s no link that people can click to take them to your product page, website, or navigation link.
Understanding and planning how to make your business really stick in a listener’s mind is essential to making the most of the exposure you’re gaining from being interviewed on a podcast show.

Here’s how you can make it difficult for listeners to forget where to find your business:

MAKE MENTIONS AS OFTEN AS REASONABLY POSSIBLE

Podcast listeners generally don’t want to rewind the episode and look for the information they may have missed. The most foolproof way of getting them to remember where to find your business is by using the age-old proven recipe for memory – REPETITION!

Podcast listeners are hungry to learn and hungry for information, but if you are sharing tons valuable, insightful information (which you should), their brains are so busy processing this information that it may cause them to miss other “less important” information like your number, the location of your business, or which social media platforms you are present on.

If you mention it often enough throughout the interview (and at the right moments) there’s a much higher chance of it sinking in and being hard to forget.

PLAN WHEN YOU WILL MENTION WHERE TO FIND YOUR BUSINESS

A good rule is to mention it in the beginning, end, and, if the episode is longer than 20-30 minutes, you might want to mention it somewhere in the middle too. However, it’s not always that easy.

It all depends on the specific show you’re guesting on. Some hosts usually mention where to find their guest’s business, at a specific, planned point in the podcast. In this case, it saves you the trouble saying it yourself. In fact, avoid double-mentioning in a short space. You don’t want to start sounding like a broken record. It also usually sticks a little more when it’s said by a voice they know and trust – the host’s.

On the other hand, some shows may want you to mention your brand/business as little as possible (or not at all), and only focus on the questions asked, in order to give their listeners the most pleasant experience possible. If this is the case, then you need to strongly consider whether it’ll still be worth your while to be interviewed on their show.

Listening to a few episodes of the podcast beforehand will give you a good indication of these above-mentioned factors.

PLAN HOW YOU WILL MENTION WHERE TO FIND YOUR BUSINESS

Last but certainly not least, you need to find a good balance between a straightforward approach and a casual one.

It’s okay to be forward and to the point once in the episode (preferably towards the end) but don’t make it too ‘sales-pitchy’ every time you say it. Throw it in casually at the beginning and middle.

An example of a casual mention: “My book is about… I still can’t believe I’ve sold nearly 10 000 copies on Amazon… making a difference in our community…” – This mentions that your book is, in fact, on Amazon but you’re not saying it too directly. The thought Thishas been casually planted.

An example of a forward mention: “… you can buy my book for $15 on Amazon.com…” – This is to the point and states all the essential information.

Listening to a few episodes of the podcast show in preparation will help with really nailing this. Furthermore, making these types of decisions on the spot will start to come much more naturally with some experience.
